This is a great thing to start off with when just beginning to draw things in Photoshop but it is also quite a nice graphic to create.
1) Open Photoshop and create a new document 400px by 400px
2) Use the marquee tool and select a circle in the center almost filling your page
3) Use the fill tool and fill it in with grey. You should now have the following:

4) Select the Custom Shape Tool from the tools window (or press U). At the top of Photoshop click on the Shape drop down and select athe pentagon. Also make sure that it is set to path on the upper left:

5) Now hold down Shift and create a pentagon on your circle. Dont make it too small and dont make it too big.
6) Then go to Window >> Paths. Hold down Ctrl and single click on the work path. Create a new layer by going to Layer >> New Layer and call it pentagon. Then use the paint bucket tool and fill the selected area with white.

7) Right click on the pentagon layer and select Duplicate Layer. Click OK.
8) Ctrl + click on the new layer you just created. Now fill in the selected area with black using the paint bucket tool.
9) You now have a black and white pentagon each on seperate layers. Now all you have to do is keep duplicating the layers and putting them in the right place. The easiest way to understand the order of a footballs patches is this: a black is surrounded by whites.
10) After doing that you should have the following:

11) Now click on one of your pentagon layers. Then press Ctrl + E. This merges the layers together. Do this until all of your pentagons are in one layer.
12) Ctrl + click on your circle layer. Go to Select >> Inverse. Click on your pentagon layer and press Delete on your keyboard.

13) Right click on your circle layer and go to Blending options. On the left hand side click on Drop Shadow. Then set the following settings:

14) Click OK. Heres my final result:
